Celecoxib is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug which is known under the brand name Celebrex. This medicine is commonly prescribed for various types of pain. Arthritis, menstrual aches, polyps in the colon, fever, other types of pain can be relieved with the help of Celebrex.
Celecoxib blocks the enzymes producing prostaglandins, the chemicals that contribute to the inflammation, pain, fever, swelling and tenderness.
Celecoxib reduces pain, fever, swelling and tenderness. Celecoxib does not impose risks of bleeding in the intestine or stomach if used in short-term treatment.
Celecoxib is prescribed as an adjunct therapy for osteoarthritis, juvenile arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. By reducing the symptoms Celecoxib improves the quality of life and ability to move.
The medicine is also prescribed for the relief of acute pain and the aches associated with primary dysmenorrhea.
Celebrex can cause side effects such as: headache, abdominal pain, indigestion, diarrhea, nausea, flatulence, and insomnia.
Other side effects can be: fainting, kidney failure, heart failure, aggravation of hypertension, chest pain, ringing in the ears, stomach and intestinal ulcers, bleeding, blurred vision, anxiety, photosensitivity, weight gain, drowsiness and weakness.
If a person has allergic reactions to other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin or ibuprofen, the treatment with Celecoxib may be contraindicated.
In case of existing allergic reaction to Celecoxib a person should not use this medicine.
Celebrex is available in the form of capsules containing 50, 100, 200, and 400 mg of Celecoxib. The dosage for individual patient is chosen with accordance to the severity of the problem, condition being treated, age, other conditions a person may have.
The lowest effective dosage is recommended for all patients.
Osteoarthritis treatment: usual dose is 100 mg two times a day or 200 mg once a day.
Rheumatoid arthritis treatment: the dose is 200 mg twice daily.
Sever or acute pain, menstrual aches: the dose is 400 mg as a single dose , the second dose is possible on the second day.
Some medicines can changes the effectiveness of Celebrex. For instance, fluconazole can increase the concentration of Celecoxib in the body, so the dosage for patients who take fluconazole should be adjusted lower dose of Celecoxib.
Celecoxib can increase the concentration of lithium in the body and its toxicity. So, if a patient takes lithium, it is not recommended to start taking Celebrex.
Skin reactions can appear after use of Celecoxib. Severe skin side effects should be immediately reported to a doctor. The medicine should be stopped. The skin side effects can be exfoliative dermatitis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), and toxic epidermal necrolysis.
The pregnant women and breast feeding women should not use Celebrex. The medicine can impose certain risks to these categories of women.
